In December 2004, Congress passed the Fact Act which impacted every California Resident.  The Fast Act provides the opportunity for California residents to receive a copy of their credit report for free from AnnualCreditReport.Com.  Don’t be fooled by television advertisements which also offer Free Credit Reports, they are not free since they require you to provide a credit card during registration and are counting on the possibility that you will not terminate your service after the 30 day trial period.

The Fact Act was passed to help consumers tackle the on-going problem of identity theft which will be featured in a future Menifee Now’s Pick article.  The New York Times reported that the average credit report contains error rates as high as 25 percent.  If you have not taken advantage of this new consumer right, there is strong likelihood that your FICO scores are being impacted by incorrect information on your credit report.

This site - www.annualcreditreport.com allows you to request a free credit file disclosure, commonly called a credit report, once every 12 months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

Fight identity theft by monitoring and reviewing your credit report. You may request your free credit report online, by phone or through the mail. Free credit reports requested online are viewable immediately upon authentication of identity. Free credit reports requested by phone or mail will be processed within 15 days of receiving your request.
